About Monument to the Silesian Insurgent in Szopienice

An obelisk with two plaques in Szopienice, successor to the Freedom Monument of 1924 destroyed in 1939.

The Monument to the Silesian Insurgent stands on Plac Powstańców Śląskich in the Katowice district of Szopienice. It takes the form of an obelisk with two commemorative plaques.

The first monument, from 1924

The first monument, called the Freedom Monument, was put up in 1924 by the residents of Szopienice and Roździeń. It was destroyed by the Germans in 1939.

The present obelisk

After the war a new monument was built. In 1985, on the 40th anniversary of liberation, the Szopienice Non-Ferrous Metals Works funded a commemorative plaque. In 1992 the monument was unveiled again, with a second plaque, which was blessed by Bishop Damian Zimoń. The plaques commemorate the return of Upper Silesia to Poland and the monument of 1924 that was destroyed in 1939.
