Orzegów Coking Plant

Kardynała Augusta Hlonda, Ruda Śląska
About Orzegów Coking Plant

A former coking plant from 1903 in Ruda Śląska-Orzegów, an industrial heritage site developed as an educational park.

The Orzegów Coking Plant in Ruda Śląska is a former coking works opened in 1903, today partly developed as an educational park. The complex of coking plants is entered in the heritage register under number A/1352/87 of 6 November 1987.

History of the works

The coking plant was created under an agreement of 1900 concluded by Joanna and Hans Ulryk Schaffgotsch with the company Oberkoks, based in Berlin. After the partition of Upper Silesia in 1921 it found itself on the Polish side of the border. Because it had not been modernised since 1945, in 1976 it was decided to close it down as an obsolete facility.

What is left and what it is today

In 2017 a project to revitalise the coking plant grounds began, covering the buildings and five hectares of land. It was completed in 2020, and since March 2021 an educational park open to residents has operated here. Among other things, the building of the coal tower, a tar tank and rows of coke oven battery chambers have survived on the site.
