About Paulsborn

A garden founded in 1895 by Dr Paul Wossidlo, with a surviving pond and a karst spring.

Paulsborn is a former garden with a karst spring in Tarnowskie Góry, founded in 1895 by Dr Paul Wossidlo. It lies in the southern part of the Wyzwolenie allotment gardens on Cegielniana Street, in the former Lasowice Colony.

Its creator and history

Paul Wossidlo, a botanist and educator, became the first director of the secondary school (Realschule) in Tarnowskie Góry in 1870. He bought a property with three ponds fed by water from a karst spring, and after retiring in 1900 he extended it and gathered natural-history, zoological and mineralogical collections. The place was also used for Masonic meetings. In May 1921 the garden was devastated and its collections plundered by Silesian insurgents. Wossidlo died in Wrocław on 27 July 1921, and the property passed into the ownership of the Giołd family.

What remains

One of the three ponds, the karst spring and several dozen specimens of native trees and shrubs have survived.
