A green square in Koszutka with the Olympic fountain, sculptures and the Gallery of Artists, with bronze bas-reliefs of people associated with Katowice.
Grunwaldzki Square in Katowice lies in the Koszutka district, in the northern part of the city, between Sokolska, Morcinka and Broniewskiego streets. It is a green space with paths and benches, with sculptures and a fountain.
The square was laid out in 1960 and developed through volunteer work days, and it was then given its present name. It was renovated in 2003 to a design from 2002 by Alina and Andrzej Grzybowski. Among other things, a roundabout, a double swing and a slide for children were built at that time.
On the square stands Jerzy Kwiatkowski's sculpture “Family” and the Olympic fountain, circular, 5.5 metres across, with five jets that send water up to 1.5 metres high. There is also a sculpture of the Doradziejka lamb.
On the city's initiative, an art gallery commemorating people associated with Katowice was created here in 2004. It consists of bas-reliefs cast in bronze and set on two-metre plinths. Those commemorated include Zbigniew Cybulski, Aleksandra Śląska, Jerzy Duda-Gracz, Stanisław Hadyna, Karol Stryja, Paweł Steller, Stanisław Ligoń and Wilhelm Szewczyk. A bust of the Silesian actor Bogumił Kobiela was unveiled in September 2010.
On the Sokolska Street side stands the Centre of Film Art in the former “Kosmos” cinema building. At number 8-10 is the office building of the Coal Industry Studies Bureau, in the Constructivist style, built after 1950 to a design by Janusz Ballenstedt.
