The square in front of the railway station in the centre of Katowice, with the Galeria Katowicka and a historic neo-Baroque tenement house.
A square in the very centre of Katowice, between 3 Maja and Młyńska streets, in front of the railway station and the Galeria Katowicka. It is one of the main interchange points of the city.
In 1972-1995 the square was called Station Square (Plac Dworcowy), and then until 2019 bore the name of Wilhelm Szewczyk. The present name, commemorating Maria and Lech Kaczyński, results from an order of the voivode of 13 December 2017, issued on the basis of the decommunisation legislation.
On the square are Katowice station with its glazed hall, opened on 29 October 2012, and the Galeria Katowicka, opened on 18 September 2013. Underground there is a bus station with ten bays. The only historic accent is a neo-Baroque corner tenement house from 1891-1900, entered in the heritage register in 2000. The present station replaced a brutalist building from 1972-2010, for the construction of which more than 30 buildings were demolished in the 1960s.
It is close from the square to the Silesian Theatre and the Cathedral of Christ the King.
