Small park in Sosnowiec's Sielec, a remnant of the grounds of the Schön factory and palace, with monumental trees.
Schön Park on the Czarna Przemsza is a remnant of a palace park that was created in 1875-1879 on the site of the former village of Kuźnica, today Sosnowiec's Sielec district. Today it is a small green space by the river, but from the trees and the layout of the ground it can still be seen that it once accompanied the factory and the residence of industrialists.
The park was laid out next to Franz Schön's vicuña-wool spinning mill and the residential buildings belonging to the factory. The first mention of it was left by Fanny Lamprecht: her account shows that already in the 1880s greenery extended around these buildings.
In 1903 the industrialists' residence, known as the New Schön Palace or Franz Schön's Palace, was built among the greenery. The park was thus part of a whole complex: the factory, the workers' houses and the owners' seat stood close together.
Its former appearance was described by Fanny Lamprecht in her memoirs: she mentions a large pond, a hill and grottoes, which were fashionable at the time. A similar picture is shown by old maps of Sosnowiec and postcards.
The park stretched from today's 1 Maja Street (formerly Sezamowa) to the place where a footbridge to the Scout Park now leads. After the Second World War a swimming pool was built on the site of the pond, and it no longer exists.
In its present form the park covers about a hectare. The Czarna Przemsza Boulevard runs through it, linking it with the Scout Park on the other side of the river and with the Sielec Park, which reaches 1 Maja Street.
Growing here are pedunculate oaks, horse chestnuts, black poplars and beeches of the purple variety. The oldest trees are about 130 years old, and three aspens are natural monuments: each is 28 metres tall, with circumferences of 408, 415 and 425 centimetres.
