A hillside city park on the site of a former cemetery, with the 15th-century Academic Church.
St John Sarkander Park in Rybnik occupies a hill in the Śródmieście district, between Gliwicka, Cegielniana, ks. Rybnickiego and ks. Brudnioka streets. Residents call it the “Na wzgórzu” or “Na górce” park (“on the hill”). It covers 16,500 m², and its trees are mainly oaks and ash trees.
Burials took place on the site of the park until 1920, and the cemetery itself was closed around 1975 on the orders of the party authorities. Until 1975 the function of a cemetery chapel was served by the Academic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a monument from the mid-15th century, which still stands in the park today. In the heritage register the park is listed as a former Roman Catholic cemetery, entered in 2024.
Next to the park stand the Basilica of St Anthony and the Museum in Rybnik.
