Town Hall in Gliwice

Rynek 1A, Gliwice
About Town Hall in Gliwice

A historic town hall in the middle of the Gliwice Market Square, with a clock tower 41.5 m high, a sculpture of the Immaculata from around 1726 and a wedding palace inside.

The town hall stands in the middle of the Market Square (Rynek) in Gliwice, laid out on a square plan in the centre of the town. The building is crowned by a clock tower 41.5 metres high, and inside it today houses, among other things, the Wedding Palace.

From the 13th century to the Neoclassical rebuilding

The first town hall in Gliwice was built at the end of the 13th century, and the present building was erected in the 15th century. Remains of the walls of the first town hall have survived in the cellars.

The building was rebuilt after the fires of 1601 and 1711, and at the end of the 18th century it fell into considerable disrepair. In the second half of the 19th century it was rebuilt in the Neoclassical style. The heritage register dates the present form to the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The façades were renovated in 2002 and again in 2024.

The body and the clock tower

The town hall is of brick, two-storeyed, on a rectangular plan, with a high hipped roof and a usable attic. The longer walls have five bays, the shorter ones four.

A square clock tower with a helm roof, a lantern and a spire is set into the north-east front wall. The top storey has a clock with four faces. In front of the north-west wall runs a single-storey passage of five arcades, now glazed.

The Immaculata sculpture by the town hall wall

By the south-east wall stands a sculpture of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculata type from around 1726. It is the work of Johann Melchior Österreich and the oldest free-standing sculpture in Gliwice. It was thoroughly conserved in 2024 during the renovation of the town hall.

What is inside

In the 1950s and 1960s the Municipal Library operated in the town hall. Today the building houses the Wedding Palace, the council chamber of the City Council and ceremonial rooms, and a café in the cellars. About 100 metres from the town hall stands the Piast Castle in Gliwice.
