Water Tower in Świętochłowice

About Water Tower in Świętochłowice

A Neo-Baroque water tower from 1909, 40 metres high, with a unique steel Klönne-system tank at the top.

The water tower in Świętochłowice is a Neo-Baroque structure from 1909 on Katowicka Street in the town centre. It is 40 metres high and remains one of the characteristic landmarks of the main street.

Why it was built

In 1904 a water supply association was set up for Bismarckhütte and Świętochłowice. To bring water to both municipalities a water tower was needed, and it was built in 1909. The design was prepared by Dr Eng. Richard Lummert, then director of the Wałbrzych waterworks.

How it is built

The tower is in the Neo-Baroque style. It is crowned by a domed roof with characteristic dormer windows, and the whole is finished with a sheet-metal lantern. At the top the steel tank of the Klönne system, with a capacity of 500 cubic metres, has survived and is considered unique. A spiral staircase runs along the walls, and about 120 steps lead to the top.

A landmark of the town centre

Together with the towers of the Church of St Peter and Paul, the Evangelical church and the clock tower of the former market hall, the tower was one of the landmarks rising above the main street of the centre. It lost its practical function in the 1960s and now has a private owner.

Nearby

Close by stands the Museum of the Silesian Uprisings in Świętochłowice, and in neighbouring Chorzów there are the Rose Park and the Prezydent Shaft.

Practical information

  • Address: Katowicka Street, Świętochłowice-Centrum.
  • The tower can be viewed from the outside from the street. Because it belongs to a private owner, the possibility of going inside has to be arranged separately.
