About Ateneum Theatre

The Silesian Puppet and Actor Theatre in Katowice, operating since 1945, with a repertoire for children and the festival “Katowice - For Children”.

The “Ateneum” Silesian Puppet and Actor Theatre in Katowice has operated since 1945 and is one of the oldest puppet companies in Poland. The theatre is based in a building at ul. św. Jana 10, and its repertoire is aimed mainly at children.

How the company developed

For many years the artistic shape of the stage was determined by visual artists who headed it in turn: Juliusz Glatty, Jerzy Zitzman and Zygmunt Smandzik. Later concepts changed with successive directors, but the theatre's connection with the local creative community was clearly marked. Most of the plays by the dramatist Edmund Wojnarowski had their premieres here, and the writer Gustaw Morcinek was the literary manager.

Repertoire and guest performances

Today's repertoire consists of classic fairy tales and contemporary works, staged in various conventions and techniques. The theatre uses the means of puppet theatre but also combines them with live-actor performance. Among the productions mentioned in the sources are “Pinocchio” by Carlo Collodi, “Gulliver's Travels” by Jonathan Swift, “Puss in Boots” with a text by Jan Brzechwa, “The Nightingale” by František Pavlíček and “Ferdynand the Magnificent” by Ludwik Jerzy Kern. “Cinderella” and “Ballads and Romances” also appear on the theatre's website.

The company has repeatedly performed abroad, including in Austria, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Germany, Slovakia, the USA and the United Kingdom. Since 2002 the theatre has organised the International Puppet Theatre Festival “Katowice - For Children”. The “Ateneum” Gallery operates in a tenement building at ul. 3 Maja 25.

Nearby

The theatre lies in the centre of Katowice, near the Cathedral of Christ the King and another stage in the city, the Stanisław Wyspiański Silesian Theatre.
