Koziegłowy
About Church of St Mary Magdalene and Corpus Christi in Koziegłowy

A Gothic church from 1470 in which 27 medieval Passion polychromes were discovered in 1972.

The Church of St Mary Magdalene and Corpus Christi in Koziegłowy was built in 1470 in the Gothic style. It is known for a cycle of medieval polychromes discovered in it. It stands right next to the Mariavite church of St Paschal.

History and structure

In 1595 a wooden nave was added to the chancel, and in 1679 it was replaced with a brick one. It is a single-nave church with a chancel about 12 m long, 9 m wide and 8.9 m high. Next to the chancel stands a sacristy, and to the nave is attached an 18th-century burial chapel of the Kawiecki family, dedicated to St Stanislaus. A steep roof is covered with shingles, and the whole is crowned with a square-plan Baroque tower, in which there used to be a clock. Next to the church stands a presbytery from 1802.

Gothic polychromes

In 1972, 27 Gothic tempera paintings were discovered by chance under the plaster. They have black outlines filled with blue, brown, red and green. Conservation lasted until 1977, and further work was carried out in 1986-1993. The cycle is regarded as one of the most completely preserved Passion cycles in late Gothic wall painting in Poland. The furnishings of the interior are mainly Baroque.
