Timber cottage from 1925 on the Gibasy pass in the Little Beskids, a former students' hut, now offering accommodation after a rebuild following a roof collapse in 2019.
Gibasówka Cottage, also called Lutecja, is a timber cottage on the Gibasy pass in the Little Beskids, now taking overnight guests. According to its hosts it lies at an altitude of about 800 m above sea level, and its beginnings go back to the mid-1920s.
The cottage was built in 1925, a year after a fire that destroyed all the houses on the pass. Until 2001 it served as a students' hut under the names Gibasówka and Lutecja, and bottles from those times reputedly still lie in the cellars around. The present owners bought it in 2006.
In January 2019 the roof gave way under very heavy snowfall and collapsed. The rebuilding took more than two years: a new roof, bathrooms and a kitchen were built, running water was brought in, and the former workshop and cowshed were converted into living space.
The cottage has 12 beds, or 17 with the separate apartment. Upstairs there are three rooms and a shared, fully equipped kitchen with a view of the mountains, and on the ground floor a double room.
Guests have at their disposal a fire circle, barbecues, a small cinema room with a projector, a travel library with guidebooks and maps, and board games. Not far from the cottage stands a wooden viewing platform with a panorama of the Beskids, from which, according to the hosts, you can even see the Tatras.
About 100 metres away stands the other cottage on the same pass, Gibasówka Hut (u Stacha), run separately.
From the pass it is easiest to set off onto the trails of the Little Beskids, for example towards Chatka pod Potrójną, less than 2 km away in a straight line. The hosts also recommend picking mushrooms and berries in the summer and autumn season.
After descending into the valley you can visit the Żywiec Ethnographic Park in Ślemień, about 3 km from the cottage in a straight line.
