A city park from 1898 in the centre of Bielsko-Biała, with the House of Music, an ice rink, Orlik pitches and two fountains.
Juliusz Słowacki Park lies in the centre of Bielsko-Biała, in the historic Dolne Przedmieście, between Słowackiego, Chopina, Lubertowicza and Piastowska streets. It was established in 1898, and today it contains the House of Music, an ice rink and sports pitches.
The park was created in 1898 as the Emperor Franz Joseph I Jubilee Park, on the site of a cholera cemetery from 1830-1832. It was also called the Shooting Range Park, because the shooting range of the Marksmen's Fraternity, founded in 1794 and active until 1939, operated here. The present name, after Juliusz Słowacki, was given after 1918.
The main building in the park is the House of Music, the seat of the Bielsko Cultural Centre, in the eastern part by Słowackiego Street. It was built in 1831 as the seat of the Marksmen's Fraternity, also adapted for meetings, celebrations and balls. In 1880 a large hall in the Neoclassical style was added, and in the 1980s a 500-seat concert hall was added on the southern and western sides. Until the mid-20th century most Bielsko cultural and political events took place here.
In the northern part of the park there is an artificial ice rink and the Orlik 2012 complex with a football pitch, a multi-purpose pitch and an athletics track. In 1938-1939 a 40-metre parachute tower stood on this spot. The park has two fountains, in the central and north-eastern parts, and two pedunculate oaks recognised as natural monuments grow in it.
It is about 700-800 metres from here to the Sułkowski Dukes' Castle and the Cathedral of St Nicholas, so the park combines well with a walk around the city centre.
Not far away also stand the Bolek and Lolek monument and the Reksio monument, popular with families with children.
