Quarries in Choroń

About Quarries in Choroń

Disused Jurassic limestone quarries in Choroń, with a lime kiln and fossils in the rock.

The quarries in Choroń are disused limestone workings in fields on the north-eastern side of the village, in the municipality of Poraj in Myszków County. Geographically this is part of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland.

What the quarries were

The quarries belonged to the manor, and limestone was extracted there until the 1950s. Towards the end of operations a lime kiln was put into use to burn the extracted stone. It still stands today in one of the overgrown workings. To the left of the Biskupice - Choroń road there is a second working, cleared of trees.

Rocks and fossils

The limestone extracted here dates from the Late Jurassic and is exposed on a cuesta, that is, a tilted slab of rock sloping to the north-east. The rocks contain ammonites, rhynchonellids and belemnites.

Practical information

  • Location: fields north-east of the buildings of Choroń, by the Biskupice - Choroń road.
  • The workings are disused and partly overgrown; take care near the edges.
  • Nearby: Pustynia Siedlecka and Olsztyn Castle.
