Superjednostka

al. W. Korfantego 16−32, Katowice
About Superjednostka

A modernist residential block from 1966-1970 in Katowice, 187.5 m long with 764 flats.

Superjednostka is a huge modernist residential block on Korfantego Avenue in Katowice. It was built in 1966-1970 as the Skomasowana Jednostka Mieszkaniowa (Consolidated Housing Unit) and for a time was the largest residential building in Poland, until 1973, when the Falowiec in Gdańsk surpassed it.

The building

The technical design was prepared by the architect Mieczysław Król and the structural engineer Franciszek Klimek. The building is 187.5 m long and 61 m high architecturally, with 18 storeys, one of them underground. It contains 764 flats, from compact M-3 units of 38 m² to larger M-5 units of 57 m². The whole stands on 72 V-shaped concrete supports, and commercial premises operate beneath the building. The building is managed by the Katowice Housing Cooperative.

Opinions about the building

During a visit to Poland in 1967 Charles de Gaulle compared Superjednostka to Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation in Marseille.
