A puppet theatre in Będzin founded by Jan Dorman, staging performances for children, young people and adults.
The Jan Dorman Dzieci Zagłębia Theatre (Children of the Basin Theatre) is a puppet theatre at ul. Teatralna 4 in Będzin, with a repertoire aimed mainly at children. It also stages performances for young people and adults. The company has operated since 1946, and since 1950 it has been based in the building of a former parish house in Będzin.
The beginnings are in Sosnowiec. In 1945 Jan Dorman founded there, with his wife Janina, the Inter-School Children's Theatre, where workshops were held to ease trauma after wartime experiences. In 1946 the Experimental Children's Theatre was created, which gave its first performances on the stage of the Municipal Theatre in Sosnowiec.
In Będzin the stage was inaugurated on 22 July 1950 with the performance "Awantura z ogniem" (A Row with Fire) by Anna Świrszczyńska, directed by Dorman. The theatre has borne its present name since 1951, and the name of its founder since 1996. Dorman led the company for 28 years and gave it the character of an auteur stage, drawing on puppet theatre, drama and happenings.
The repertoire is divided into the Baby Stage (Baby Scena) for the youngest, performances for children and performances for young people. Titles for children include "Czerwony Kapturek" (Little Red Riding Hood), "Pinokio", "Pippi Pończoszanka" (Pippi Longstocking) and "W dolinie Muminków" (In Moominvalley). In 2018-2019 the theatre also played on a small stage in the Będzin Miasto station building. In 2022 the institution received the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture Gloria Artis.
The theatre's website publishes the repertoire week by week and gives the age category of the audience for each performance, so it is easy to match a title to a child's age.
About 700 metres from the theatre stands Będzin Castle on its hill. For families with children, Freak Park is also close.
