Drama theatre in Gliwice on ul. Nowy Świat, formerly the Gliwice Musical Theatre, with four stages in the city.
At ul. Nowy Świat 55-57 in Gliwice stands the City Theatre (Teatr Miejski), which until 2016 was called the Gliwice Musical Theatre. It was founded in 1952 as the Silesian Operetta, and today it is a drama theatre with several stages in the city.
The theatre was founded on 11 October 1952 as the Silesian Operetta, a branch of the Silesian Opera in Bytom. In 1996 the name changed to the Musical Theatre in Gliwice, and from 2001 to 2016 the name Gliwice Musical Theatre was in use. The repertoire included classic operettas and musicals, as well as ballet, opera and contemporary dance performances. The company organised, among other things, the Gliwice Theatre Meetings.
In 2005 the theatre took over care of the ruins of the former City Theatre, and a year later of the building of the former Bajka cinema. By a City Council resolution of 13 October 2016 the City Theatre in Gliwice was established. From August 2016 the repertoire shifted towards drama and impresario theatre.
Performances take place on four stages: the Main Stage and the Small Stage on Nowy Świat, the Stage on aleja Przyjaźni in the ruins of the former Victoria Theatre, and the Bajka Stage in the Amok cinema building. The theatre also runs educational activities for children, families and seniors, including the "Children's Theatre Studio" and the "Seniors' Theatre".
