Nowy Theatre in Zabrze

The Nowy Theatre (Teatr Nowy) in Zabrze is housed in the building of the former casino of the Donnersmarck steelworks at Plac Teatralny 1. The brick building in the eclectic style stands in the very centre of the town and has served the theatre since 1959.

The former casino building

The building was erected as the casino of the Donnersmarck steelworks at the turn of 1900 and 1901; the heritage register gives the year 1900, other sources 1901. It is built of brick, and its style is described as eclectic.

The building is entered in the heritage register, and the register names the function for which it was built outright: casino.

A theatre within the casino walls

The theatre has operated here since 1959. Over time the main stage and the auditorium were modernised, a part with dressing rooms was added and the administration building was renovated. In 2022 the chamber stage was given a patron.

From the town side it is close to the Zabrze Municipal Park and to the Zabrze water tower, and after a performance to the Guido Coal Mine.
