Things to do in Rajcza: the market-square church with the Madonna with a braid, the Butorza reserve in the Żywiec Beskids and a small ski centre.

Rajcza is a commune at the foot of the Żywiec Beskids, with a market square, a parish church and trails that lead into the forest. The five places on the list let you combine architecture, winter recreation and nature protection in one outing.

What is there to see in the centre of Rajcza?

On the market square stands the Church of St Lawrence and St Casimir the Prince, a brick three-nave church from 1886-1889. Since 1997 it has been a local Marian shrine with an image of the Madonna with a braid, one of four such places in the Żywiec region. The first, wooden church was built in 1674 and closed in 1884 because of its poor condition.

On ulica Ujsolska you will find the palace complex, a former nineteenth-century residence. The first residence was built around 1809 by Agnieszka Siemońska née Jordan, and in 1894 Prince Eugeniusz Lubomirski bought it for his son Władysław, who rebuilt the palace in the neo-Renaissance style in 1895-1896. Today the palace houses a long-term care facility, so the complex is viewed from outside, together with its park. Other buildings of this kind are collected under architecture in Rajcza.

Where can you ski and walk in the forest near Rajcza?

Ski Park Rajcza is a small winter ski station on the north-western slope of Cząpel hill (655 m above sea level), with a single lift 310 m long. It suits people who want a short run close to the centre rather than a big resort. A Way of the Cross also leads from the church up the slope.

Those who love quiet will find the Butorza Nature Reserve, a strict reserve of 30.08 hectares on the northern slopes of Rachowiec in the Wielka Racza Group. It was created in 1961 and protects a lower-montane spruce and fir forest with Istebna spruce. It is managed by the Ujsoły Forest District, and entry is free. As a strict reserve it serves observation more than recreation.

Are there places of remembrance in Rajcza?

The Roman Catholic Cemetery near the church was founded in the mid-nineteenth century, and the parish was established in 1844. The cemetery is listed as a monument and has a separate war section with 261 soldiers of the First World War. Cast-iron crosses designed by Hans Mayr have survived there. It is a calm place, free to enter, that calls for quiet.
