Things to do in Bełk: a wooden church from 1753-1756, a neo-Gothic tomb chapel on a hill and an old cemetery with 39 historic gravestones.
Bełk lies in the Czerwionka-Leszczyny municipality and is a stop for anyone interested in wooden architecture. All three places are on Kościelna street, so a short walk is enough.
Which historic sites in Bełk should you see first?
St Mary Magdalene's Church is a wooden building from 1753-1756 on the Wooden Architecture Trail of the Silesian Voivodeship, in the Rybnik loop. Since 2007 it has no longer been the parish church, because the parish moved to a new building. The village had a church as early as 1447, and the polychromes were uncovered during renovation.
On a low hill on the same street stands the tomb chapel of the Gemander and Lukas families, neo-Gothic, built in 1859-1860 on the initiative of Antoni Gemander. The hill may be what remains of a medieval stronghold, and it is listed as a monument together with the chapel.
Around the wooden church spreads the old cemetery with a fence topped by a shingle roof. It keeps 39 historic gravestones from the 19th and early 20th centuries, mostly neo-Gothic.
