What to see in the spa town
Above all the Spa Park on Uzdrowiskowa Street and the old pump room in it. Both date from the first years of the spa and today fill an hour's walk.
It all began with a borehole in which, in 1856, the Prussian mining authority, searching for salt, struck brine at a depth of about six hundred and sixteen metres. The first spa buildings arose in 1860-1862, and the first season began in June 1862. The park is a historic landscape park from the second half of the 19th century, on the monument register. It was renovated in 2010-2015 and now has gazebos, a brine graduation tower and chess tables. The pump room of 1862 is a wooden pavilion, one of the oldest buildings of the spa, now used as a park pavilion. More spa places are gathered under spas in Goczałkowice-Zdrój, and walks for two are described under places for couples in Goczałkowice-Zdrój.
What to do at Goczałkowice Reservoir
Stroll and look at the water. Goczałkowice Reservoir was created by damming the Vistula and ranks among the biggest man-made lakes of Upper Silesia, with a surface of up to three thousand two hundred hectares. Pszczyna lies about five kilometres to the north.
Its main job is delivering drinking water to a large part of the conurbation, and birds have found an important refuge here. The dam rises fourteen metres and runs for almost three kilometres, while the water averages about five metres in depth. Reaching the shore needs no ticket.
Where to go on a rainy day
To the Technical Education Centre at Jeziorna 87, at the entrance to the dam. The exhibition is built around four themes: weather, space, the dam and renewable energy.
The exhibits are interactive. You will see models of a hydroelectric plant and a nuclear reactor, and a laboratory where the composition of water and weather conditions are studied. The astronomy section shows models of space rockets. It is a good idea for families with children who like to experiment.
