What to see in Sośnicowice? A late Baroque palace on castle foundations, the church of St James from the late 18th century and a small Jewish cemetery.

Sośnicowice is a small town in the Silesian Voivodeship where the palace and the church are a few steps apart. The cemetery lies separately and calls for a more thoughtful visit, as it is a trace of the former Jewish community.

What to see in the centre of Sośnicowice?

The Palace in Sośnicowice on Kozielska Street was built in 1755 by Karol Józef von Hoditz on the foundations of a medieval castle. A landscape park spreads out beside it. Since 1965 the building has housed a social care home, so it is in daily use and not a museum.

St James' Church is a Baroque single-nave building from 1786-1794, put up after a fire in the town and listed as a monument. Earlier churches stood on this spot from the 13th century.

What is the Jewish cemetery in Sośnicowice?

The Jewish Cemetery was founded in 1829 and is regarded as the smallest surviving Jewish cemetery in the Silesian Voivodeship. It was devastated under the Third Reich, and only a few fragments of matzevot, the Jewish gravestones, survive.

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit the palace in Sośnicowice?

The palace works as a social care home, so view it from the outside and from the park.

What is left of the Jewish cemetery?

A few fragments of gravestones. The place is above all a trace of the former community, not an extensive necropolis.
