Things to do in Sopotnia Wielka: a waterfall in the village centre, a mountain hut on Hala Rysianka, Romanka peak and two nature reserves in the Żywiec Beskids.
Sopotnia Wielka is a mountain village in the Żywiec Beskids, the starting point for trails to meadows and peaks. Most places are free and linked to nature, so it suits hikers, couples and solo travellers. There is also one indoor place for children.
What can you see in Sopotnia Wielka without going up the mountains?
The waterfall in Sopotnia lies on the Sopotnia stream in the very middle of the village, just below the bridge. It is about 10 m high and is described as the largest waterfall in the Polish Beskids; according to an eighteenth-century chronicler, the village takes its name from it. Entry is free.
For children and families on a rainy day there is the Youth Space Station YSS, a ground-based imitation of the interior of a module of the International Space Station, built in 2007-2008. It was built by the POLARIS-OPP association, and the programme includes astronaut sessions for groups.
Where do the trails from Sopotnia Wielka lead?
The PTTK mountain hut on Hala Rysianka sits at 1,290 m, on a meadow below the top of Rysianka. The first hut opened here in May 1937, and today it is one of the larger trail junctions in the range, with about 50 beds, a buffet and a kitchen.
Romanka is 1,366 m above sea level rising above Żabnica and both Sopotnias in the Żywiec-Orava Beskids, as the top point of its group. The summit is covered with dense forest and offers no views, but the massif and several approach trails give enough reasons for a trip. Hala Cebulowa is a former pastoral meadow on the northern ridge of Pilsko, at about 1,280-1,308 m, valued for its rare stand of Siberian garlic, white false-hellebore and pasque flower.
On the Witasówka clearing above the village stands the AKT Dobrodziej hut, a former student hut, now private, so do not treat it as a hut open to everyone.
