Things to do in Lubliniec: the castle in the centre, the Edith Stein museum, wooden St Anne's church and Droniowicki Reservoir in northern Silesia.
Lubliniec is a small town where everything has a story: a ducal castle, a church from the early 16th century and the family home of St Edith Stein. On the other side there are places to relax, from a reservoir to a games hall for the whole family.
Where should you start sightseeing in Lubliniec?
Start at the castle at Grunwaldzka 40, which stands in the middle of a park. The first written mention of it dates from the late 14th century and links it with Duke Władysław of Opole. Today the former ducal and family seat is a hotel with a restaurant and a boutique spa, so you visit as a guest, not as at a museum. The building is in the register of monuments.
About 300 metres away, in the town centre, stands St Nicholas's church, a brick building from 1576-1579, also in the register of monuments. The register of monuments gives a different date than 1576-1579, so the exact history of the building is worth checking on the spot. Similar monuments, from castles to the palaces around town, are described in the article Palaces around Tarnowskie Góry and Lubliniec, and the history of the town in the text Lubliniec: the castle, the icon from Jasna Góra in 1655 and the patron Edith Stein.
Which places in Lubliniec are linked to Edith Stein?
The Pro Memoria Edith Stein Museum occupies the upper floor of a house at Edyty Stein 2, which belonged to Edith's grandparents, the Courant family. It opened on 28 February 2009. Two exhibition rooms show multimedia displays about the life of the saint and her death in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Edith Stein is a saint of the Catholic Church, a martyr and the patron of the town.
Her name is also borne by the church in Steblów, built from scratch in the 1980s and 1990s and since 2021 a diocesan shrine of its patron. Edith's grandparents, Adelajda and Salomon Courant, rest in the Jewish cemetery on 11 Listopada street. It was founded in 1845, and by 1939 some 1117 people had been buried there. A wall, a gate, a pre-burial house and a lapidarium survive. It is a burial ground and a place of remembrance, so visitors should keep quiet.
Which churches in Lubliniec are the oldest?
The oldest are the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross from 1505, founded by Duke John of Opole, and the wooden St Anne's church from 1653. The latter stands at Pasieczna 3, has a log construction, shingles and Baroque furnishings, and forms part of the voivodeship's wooden architecture route.
In 1928-1931 the Church of St Stanislaus Kostka was built as the chapel of the Oblate seminary; today it is a parish church with a Fatima chapel and a monastery park. In Kokotek, a district of the town, stands the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen, which grew from a chapel set up in 1940 in a former restaurant. All the churches are listed under churches and monasteries in Lubliniec, and monuments seen from outside under architecture in Lubliniec.
