Things to do in Radzionków: the Bread Museum, the Silesian Botanical Garden, a former coal mine and a neo-Gothic basilica with a 61 m tower.

Radzionków is a town on the edge of the conurbation that combines mining heritage with small museums and greenery. The five places on the list suit a rainy day as well as a walk across former mining land.

Which museums in Radzionków are worth visiting?

The Bread Museum at ulica Zofii Nałkowskiej 5 in the Rojca district opened on 26 April 2000. It is a private educational venue with several thousand exhibits, mainly bakers' machines and tools. Visitors can shape and bake bread themselves, and the museum lies on the Industrial Monuments Route.

The Documentation Centre for the Deportation of Upper Silesians has a completely different character. It occupies a former railway station building and is both an exhibition space and an archive, telling the story of Upper Silesians sent to forced labour in the Soviet Union in 1945. It was created thanks to the town, the Institute of National Remembrance office in Katowice, and the deportees and their families, backed financially by 29 Silesian local governments. A visit is best treated as an encounter with history, and the background is explained in the article The deportation of Upper Silesians to the USSR in 1945.

Where in Radzionków can you see mining heritage and nature?

The Radzionków Coal Mine operated from the early 1870s until the end of 1995. The first shaft, Laura, was started on 14 August 1871 on the initiative of Hugo I Henckel von Donnersmarck. What remains is a small memorial to mining: an open-air display of machines and wagons, and the chapel of St Barbara.

On Księża Góra, a former mining site, the Silesian Botanical Garden covers 16 hectares as a habitat garden. Its main part consists of plant communities that grew here before the garden was founded: woodland, scrub, meadows and wetland. The garden is open all year and entry is free. More places of this kind are described in the article Botanical gardens, arboreta and themed gardens of Silesia.

What else can you see in Radzionków besides museums?

The Church of St Adalbert at ulica Świętego Wojciecha 50 is a neo-Gothic brick basilica built in 1872-1875 and consecrated in 1896. Its tower is over 61 metres high and the organ has 60 stops. The parishioners paid for the construction with their own labour, together with Count Hugo I Henckel von Donnersmarck. The church is listed as a monument.
