Things to do in Kończyce Wielkie: a Baroque palace with a park, the wooden Church of St Michael, a palace chapel and a countess's bench.

Kończyce Wielkie lies in the Hażlach commune, in Cieszyn Silesia. The palace with its park makes the strongest impression, but the village also has one of the biggest wooden churches in the region and a memorial to the victims of a labour camp.

What to see around the palace in Kończyce Wielkie

The palace, the chapel and the countess's bench. The palace and chapel are neighbours on Zamkowa Street, and the bench stands by the path towards the palace, so one walk covers everything.

The palace at Zamkowa 20 is Baroque according to the monument register, and historical accounts mention rebuildings in the spirit of French Baroque with Classical elements. A landscape park with an artificial pond surrounds it. The first noble seat was built in the early 15th century by the Kornic family, then the village belonged to the Mniszech, Karwiński and Bludowski families, and in the early 17th century passed to the Wilczek family. Beside it stands the Chapel of Divine Providence of 1776, Baroque and built of brick, funded by the Harasowski family. In 1893, on the occasion of the wedding of Gabriela, née Larisch von Mönnich, to Count Felix von Thun und Hohenstein, it was modernised and given a Classical interior.

The last owner of the palace is remembered by the monument to Gabriela Thun Hohenstein, a bronze bench unveiled on 27 October 2019. Karol Badyna made the sculpture, and a health trail leading towards the palace was laid out around it. Locally the countess was called the Good Lady of Kończyce. Where are the labour camp prisoners commemorated?

On Kościelna Street stands an obelisk commemorating prisoners murdered in the labour camp in Zebrzydowice. It is the resting place of about one hundred and thirty victims of German crimes from 1939-1945.

Those who died in the camp were mostly Jews from Western Europe, among them prisoners from the Netherlands. Detailed numbers and names are lacking, so the data are worth comparing with studies by museums and the Institute of National Remembrance. The obelisk was put up by Antoni Opioł, a former prisoner of Dachau, Gusen and Mauthausen, together with the head of the local school. The place calls for silence and respect.
