Żabnica

1,322 m peak in the Żywiec Beskids with a viewing meadow, a mountain hut and a junction of trails

Things to do in Żabnica: Rysianka peak, mountain huts, a wooden church and the Lipowska reserve in the Żywiec Beskids, Silesia.

Żabnica lies in the Żywiec Beskids and works mainly as a base for mountain trips: meadows, trails and huts rise above the village. In the village itself stands a timber church, one of the stops on the regional trail of wooden buildings.

Where to hike from Żabnica

The main goal is Rysianka, a peak of 1,322 metres whose ridge carries the border between Żabnica and neighbouring Złatna. It joins three ridges, and on its slope lie a meadow with a PTTK hut and a major trail junction. Entering the summit requires no ticket.

The second direction is the PTTK hut on Hala Boracza, at about 854 metres, with an address in Żabnica at Boracza 22. The first building went up in the 1920s, raised by the Jewish sports society Makkabi from Bielsko, and the history of the place includes a fire and a post-war rebuilding. Romanka is visible from the area.

Lower down, at 856 metres, lies the Słowianka Tourist Station, a private two-storey wooden building with twenty-four beds, a shared kitchen and a grocery shop. From the meadow you look at Romanka, Pawlusia meadow and Rysianka. More routes appear under mountains in Żabnica.

Which meadows and clearings are worth seeing?

Two meadows differ in character: Cukiernica Wyżna is a former grazing meadow now being overtaken by forest, while Hala Borucz is a broad clearing on the Borucza ridge with huts and a downhill track.

Cukiernica lies beside the trail from Rajcza to Hala Boracza, next to lower Cukiernica Niżna, which is still grazed. Three trails of different colours cross the area. Hala Borucz is not a classic grazing meadow: these were the fields and meadows of the village of Cisiec, now levelled and developed for downhill use.

Where is nature protected, and what about the church?

High on the ridge between Rysianka and Lipowski Wierch you will find the Lipowska Nature Reserve, created in 2008 on more than sixty hectares, protecting upland raised bogs. The area lies within the Żywiec Landscape Park.

In the village on Księdza Karola Śmiecha Street stands the wooden Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa, built in 1910-1914 and extended in 1957-1961. It has a tower with a bulbous cap, rests on a stone foundation and is a stop on the Wooden Architecture Trail. Free places are collected under free things to do in Żabnica.
