Things to do in Ujsoły: a church with a stone façade, the U Koconia shrine, a village cemetery and a student hut above Złatna in the Żywiec Beskids.
Ujsoły is a village in the Żywiec Beskids whose monuments stand right by the main road. Residents once belonged to the parish in Rajcza and began planning their own church in 1911.
How was the church in Ujsoły built?
The building site was blessed in March 1913, and Bishop Adam Stefan Sapieha laid the foundation stone in 1922. The Church of St Joseph the Worker, designed by the Kraków architect Wacław Krzyżanowski, went up in stages until 1975. It stands in the centre of the village, at the junction with the road to Złatna.
In 1913, before any church existed, mass was held in the brick U Koconia shrine, dating from the early 1700s, enlarged in 1866 and dedicated to the Heart of Jesus. On Beskidzka street lies the parish cemetery, 0.81 hectares and in use to this day. The oldest surviving gravestone is from 1919, and old oaks once grew among the graves. It is a resting place, so walk through quietly.
