Things to do in Pyskowice: a railway open-air museum with steam locomotives, a Neoclassical town hall with a museum, St Nicholas church and Dzierżno Duże lake.

Pyskowice lies next to Gliwice, on the western edge of the Upper Silesian conurbation. It has a compact centre with churches and a town hall, a rolling stock museum for technology fans, and a large lake with free access to its shores. All the places can be combined into one day.

What can you see in the centre of Pyskowice?

The town hall at Rynek 9 was built in 1823 as a three-storey brick building; in 1866 its facade received new plaster. Since 2003 it has housed the Municipal Museum, with displays about local and regional history, and the PODcień gallery. It is a good stop on a rainy day.

The Church of St Nicholas on Kościelna Street is the oldest church in town: Gothic, rebuilt in the Baroque and Neo-Gothic periods. Its present appearance owes mostly to the reconstruction after the town fire of 1822; it has a Neo-Gothic facade and historic organs. West of the centre stands the Church of St Stanislaus, a small Neo-Gothic branch church of 1865-1868 next to a historic cemetery, on the site of an older building from the mid-fifteenth century. The third is the Neo-Gothic Lutheran church of 1894-1896, built by Teodor Schmitz and still in use. Other churches are on the page of churches and monasteries in Pyskowice.

Is there anything for technology fans in Pyskowice?

The railway open-air museum is a rolling stock museum on the grounds of a disused engine shed and station depot. Since 1998 an association has run it, collecting and preserving historic vehicles: steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and wagons. Because of the nature of the collection, it also works on a rainy day.

Where can you go to the water in Pyskowice?

Dzierżno Duże is an artificial lake of over five hundred hectares; it appeared in 1964, when water filled the sand pits in the Kłodnica valley. It lies on the border of Gliwice, Pyskowice and the Rudziniec municipality, on the left bank of the Gliwice Canal. Access to the shore is free, and the views and quiet paths suit solo walks.

What in Pyskowice recalls the former Jewish community?

The Jewish cemetery on Zaolszany Street, beside the road towards Gliwice, was founded in 1830. It covers 0.6 hectares, has about two hundred and twenty matzevot and a monument from 1988, and its entry in the monuments register dates from 2020. The last burials took place during the Second World War. Be quiet there.
