Things to do in Koszęcin: the palace home of the Śląsk ensemble, two historic churches, a crane reserve and a bowling alley by the park.
Koszęcin is associated with a palace that has housed a famous song and dance ensemble for decades. Other places gather around it too: a neo-Gothic church, a wooden pilgrimage church and a forest with a peat bog. It makes a good target for a relaxed day trip.
What to see first in Koszęcin
Start with the Koszęcin Palace at Zamkowa 3. It is a residence from the early 17th century, rebuilt in 1828-1830 in the neoclassical style, and since 1953 the seat of the Śląsk Song and Dance Ensemble named after Stanisław Hadyna.
A wooden castle burned down here in 1603, and Andrzej Kochcicki finished a brick one in 1605. From 1804 until the end of the war the estate belonged to the Hohenlohe-Ingelfingen family, which commissioned the rebuilding to a design by Albert Roch. In the courtyard stands the Stanisław Hadyna bench from 2006, the work of Marek Maślaniec: the composer sits on a wide bench with a pipe and sheet music beside him. The story of the ensemble is told in an article, the Śląsk Song and Dance Ensemble, from the Mirowska Hall to the palace in Koszęcin. For the palace layout and park see architecture in Koszęcin.
Which churches in Koszęcin are worth seeing?
Two: the brick Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the wooden Church of the Holy Trinity. They differ in age and material, so they are worth comparing on one trip.
The first was built in 1907-1908 in neo-Gothic style to a design by Ludwig Schneider. Prince Hohenlohe gave sixty thousand marks, all the timber and four hundred thousand bricks, and together with the vicarage of 1899 the building was entered on the monument register in 1998. The second dates from 1724, is a pilgrimage church on the Wooden Architecture Trail, and is linked to the legend of a miller's daughter who saw three children beside an oak.
Where to walk, and what to do in the rain
For a walk head to the Jeleniak Mikuliny Nature Reserve. It was created in 1957 to protect a crane breeding ground and a peat bog, and in 2012 it grew to more than a hundred and twenty hectares. Cranes have nested here since at least 1840.
On a rainy day choose the Kręgielnia Pod Pałacem bowling alley at Zamkowa 1, with two lanes, a bar and an air-conditioned room. A group gathering can be arranged here too. More ideas for solo travellers are in solo places in Koszęcin.
