Things to do in Cisownica: the Zadni Gaj reserve with two-hundred-year-old yews, traces of iron mining, a Lutheran church and a former mountain hut.

Cisownica is a village in Cieszyn Silesia, beneath the slopes of the Silesian Beskids. The four places on the list combine nature, industrial history and sacred architecture on a small scale.

How to see Cisownica in one afternoon

The Zadni Gaj Nature Reserve, 6.39 ha, created in 1957 on the Zagój slope, protects several dozen yews about two hundred years old growing among Carpathian beech forest. Entry is free. The yew is a rare species in Poland, which gives the site its natural value.

The industrial strand is Łopuka, a heap of earth left from old iron ore mining, one of a dozen or so such traces nearby. The poor ore, siderite, was dug from primitive adits until 1870 and carted to ironworks in Ustroń and later in Třinec.

The Church of St John the Baptist is a modern Lutheran church, built from 1976 and consecrated on 21 June 1981. The former PTTK hut "Pod Tułem" at ulica Turystyczna 17, from the 1930s, no longer takes in hikers as a hut, because a restaurant with guest rooms operates there now.
