Architecture in Toszek means a Gothic castle, a classicist town hall and two Baroque places of worship, all within one small town in Silesia.
The castle, town hall, parish church and cemetery chapel come from different periods, so seeing them in turn shows how the local style moved from Gothic to Classicism.
Begin at Toszek Castle on Zamkowa Street, then walk to the market square, where the Town Hall in Toszek stands. In a short stretch you can compare Gothic, Baroque and Classicist architecture, and the two religious buildings round off the picture of the town.
The castle occupies the western hill above the old town. The Gothic building from the 14th and 15th centuries was remodelled in the 1600s by the Colonna family and now houses a cultural centre. What catches the eye is the gate, flanked by two towers that are square below and octagonal above.
The town hall dates from 1836 and stands at Bolesława Chrobrego 2. It has three storeys, and its front facing the square ends in a turret at each corner. It was rebuilt after wartime damage and today town officials work there.
The Church of St Catherine of Alexandria on Kościelna Street was built in 1456 and remodelled in the Baroque spirit in 1713-1715. Its organ was built in 1844 by Moritz Robert Müller. The second building is the late Baroque Cemetery Chapel of St Barbara from the 18th century, beside which stands a gravestone commemorating prisoners of the NKWD camp.
There are four such sites: the castle, the town hall, the parish church and the cemetery chapel. More places in the town are collected under Toszek.
It now houses a cultural centre, so it is more than an exterior view, but check opening arrangements on the spot.
