A rainy day in Cieszyn: seven places under cover, from a theatre of 1910 through museums and a library to an indoor play park for children.
Cieszyn, a town divided by a border on the Olza in 1920, has plenty of central buildings in which to spend a wet afternoon. The story of that division is told in the article Cieszyn on the Olza. The places below run from museums to those for families.
Which Cieszyn museums suit a rainy day?
You can choose among five museums and a library: the Museum of Cieszyn Silesia, the Printing Museum, the Protestantism Museum, the Museum of the 4th Podhale Rifles Regiment and the Cieszyn Library. Each will fill an hour or two.
The Museum of Cieszyn Silesia was founded in 1802 by Father Leopold Jan Szersznik and is regarded as one of the oldest public museums in Poland. Its home since 1931 is the Larisch palace (1790-1796), commissioned by a count as the town rebuilt after the fire of 1789. The holdings include archaeology, ethnography and photographs, and one hall is the Egyptian Hall. The Printing Museum at Głęboka 50 shows a historic printing machine with its fonts, plus engraving matrices, presses and bookbinding gear. It was established in 1996, lies on the Industrial Monuments Route, and since 2022 has been part of the Cieszyn Castle institution.
The Protestantism Museum has been set up on the balcony of the Lutheran Jesus Church. It pairs an exhibition of Reformation mementos with one of the oldest Lutheran libraries in Cieszyn Silesia, continuing the work of the Tschammer Library of the seventeenth century. The Cieszyn Library, a research library at Mennicza 46, cares for the town's historic book collections and also has its own exhibition gallery in a house known as the mint. The building, also known as the Bludowski palace, was reworked in 1704-1719.
The Museum of the 4th Podhale Rifles Regiment at Frysztacka 2 is a private military museum, opened in 2008. It tells of the regiment stationed in Cieszyn from 1920 and of aviation in Cieszyn Silesia in 1937-1945. It is best visited calmly and with respect for its subject.
What to do in Cieszyn with children or in the evening
KIDDY Park at Pawła Stalmacha 10A is an indoor play park on two floors, covering 350 square metres. The youngest, from nought to three, have their own Toddler Zone with a ball pit, older children have the main arena with a twin-track slide 3.6 metres high, and parents have a café.
The address of the Adam Mickiewicz Theatre is Plac Teatralny 1, in Cieszyn's Old Town. The five-storey house of 1910 is the work of two Viennese architects, Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, who designed forty-eight theatres across Europe. It seats 630, appears in the register of monuments and forms part of the European Route of Historic Theatres. The plan to build it first arose in spring 1902, pushed by councillor Franz Barth.
