Churches in Czechowice-Dziedzice: the Baroque Church of St Catherine, a triangular church with three towers and Lutheran heritage.

Czechowice-Dziedzice is a railway and industrial town, and its churches show several eras at once: Baroque of the eighteenth century, brick buildings of the late nineteenth century, functionalism and architecture of the 1990s.

Which church in Czechowice-Dziedzice is the oldest?

The Church of St Catherine at Kopernika 42 is a Baroque brick church of 1722-1729 on a Latin-cross plan. The project was set in motion by the priest Walenty Martius and paid for mainly by the estate owner Franciszek Karol Kotuliński. Above the entrance is a semicircular pediment with the Kotuliński coat-of-arms cartouche and the date 1729. The tower was destroyed and rebuilt after the Second World War.

Which churches were built in the 19th and 20th centuries?

The Church of Our Lady Help of Christians at Legionów 57 stands in the Dziedzice estate. It was raised in 1882-1890 and consecrated in June 1890 by Bishop Franciszek Śniegoń of Cieszyn. An independent parish was set up in 1899, and between the wars the church was enlarged to its present size. The organ dates from 1963.

Finished just before the outbreak of war was the Church of Our Lady, Queen of Poland, a brick functionalist building put up in 1938-1939 under Father Jan Nepomucen Barabasz. It was blessed in May 1945, the parish was established in 1958, and the consecration took place in 1970.

A separate community is represented by the Lutheran chapel, blessed on 17 December 1911. The congregation was formed by German-speaking workers who came with railway construction and industry at the end of the nineteenth century. The first service was held in 1896 as a branch of the Bielsko parish, and work on its own chapel began in 1910 on land donated by Leon Zipser.

Where can you see modern church architecture?

The Church of Jesus Christ the Redeemer is the youngest church here: building took five years, from 1995 to 1999, and the concept was by Stanisław Niemczyk. The body rests on a triangular plan with three towers, and its brick walls form a pattern. The year 1999 brought it the Grand Prix in the Architecture of the Year competition. It replaced the earlier parish church, fitted out in a joinery of 1929, which had become too small.
