Solo in Czeladź: a gallery in a former power station, the Saturn Museum, the mine's lamp room and three churches - six places for one person.
Czeladź is a town in the Dąbrowa Basin whose rhythm for over a hundred years was set by the Saturn mine. Today its buildings host art and a museum, and next to them stand monumental churches from the early 20th century. It is a good destination for anyone who likes to look around at their own pace. Many more ideas for one person appear under solo attractions in Silesia, and the full list of places in Czeladź is under things to do in Czeladź.
What is there to visit around the old Saturn colliery?
Three places on the grounds of the former mine or next to them: a contemporary art gallery in the power station, a museum in the director's villa and the lamp room building. The colliery worked from 1887 right up to 31 December 1997, and its site is part of the Industrial Monuments Route.
The Elektrownia Contemporary Art Gallery is housed at ul. Dehnelów 45 in a brick building from 1902-1908 designed by Józef Pius Dziekoński. Besides exhibitions of present-day art, the hall keeps machines that date from the early 1900s, so it also works as a refuge from rain. The Saturn Museum, at ul. Dehnelów 10, has its seat in the villa where the mine's director lived, known as the Palace under the Pillars. It holds mementos of the history of the town and of the mining industry, as well as a machine park. The former lamp room building at ul. Kościuszki 9 is a post-mining structure that between 1950 and 1990 belonged to the mine called Czerwona Gwardia. The new roles of former mines are described in the article Mines in new roles: Saturn in Czeladź, Wilson Shaft, the Culture Zone and Guido.
Which churches in Czeladź deserve a visit?
Three, very different. The brick church of St Stanislaus from 1904-1913 makes the greatest impression, but the Neo-Romanesque basilica in the Piaski estate is just as interesting.
The church of St Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr at ul. Bytomska 5 is monumental and on the monuments register. It was designed by Tomasz Pajzderski and Hugo Kuder, and the polychrome was made by Maciej Makarewicz. Our Lady of Sorrows church at ul. Kościuszki 5 is a Neo-Romanesque basilica of 1922-1924 whose model was a church in Brittany, France, and since 2015 it has served as a sanctuary of St John Vianney. The church of St Matthew the Apostle in the Musiała estate grew out of a chapel from 1986 and was consecrated in 1995; it is an example of church building from the 1980s and 1990s.
