Free things to do in Janów: four nature reserves on the Jura and a historic Jewish cemetery - five places with free entry.
The municipality of Janów lies in the Częstochowa district, on the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, within the Eagles' Nests Landscape Park. We mean this municipality, not the neighbourhoods of the same name in other towns of the region. Free outings from the whole region are gathered under free things to do in Silesia, and a separate Janów page covers the whole municipality.
Which Janów reserve is the largest?
The largest is the Parkowe reserve, enlarged in 2011 to 234 ha. It lies near Złoty Potok and Siedlec. It takes in hills, stretches of the Wiercica valley, rock outcrops, caves and the places where the river rises.
The reserve was established on 3 September 1957. Anyone who likes Jurassic rock will find outcrops, caves and water here, more than at the other places. The remaining reserves are smaller, but each has a different forest.
Where in Janów can you see beech woods?
In the Bogdaniec reserve and the Bukowa Kępa reserve. The first grows on limestone rises, the second occupies 52.84 ha.
Bogdaniec spreads over the hills of Bogdaniec and Koziarska Góra; two kinds of beech wood are protected there, together with tall rock faces and their rock vegetation. Bukowa Kępa, established in 1995, is a strict reserve: beside the beech grow sycamore, pedunculate oak and large-leaved lime. Check before you go where you may enter, because protection in a strict reserve is the tightest.
What else can you see in Janów for free?
The fir and pine forest of the Kaliszak reserve and the Jewish cemetery on Janów's Kościuszki Street. The first covers 14.64 ha, the second 1.2 ha.
The Kaliszak reserve belongs to the Sieraków forest district and neighbours Apolonka; some trees are a century old or more. The cemetery was founded at the end of the 18th century, and the register dates it to the second half of that century. It is closed to burials, covers 1.2 ha and has been on the register of monuments since 1986. About twenty matzevot survive from the old gravestones, the oldest dated 1791.
