Churches and monasteries in Ligota-Panewniki, a Katowice district: the Franciscan basilica, Panewniki Calvary and three parish churches.
The district is best known for its Franciscan monastery complex, but there are more churches here, from a neo-Romanesque basilica of the early 20th century to a church consecrated in 2023. It suits anyone who wants to combine the basilica, a park of chapels and contemporary parish churches in one walk.
What to see in the basilica and on the Calvary in Panewniki?
The heart of the district is formed by the Basilica of St Louis the King and the Assumption at Panewnicka 76 and the neighbouring Panewniki Calvary.
The basilica was raised of clinker brick in 1905-1908 as the neo-Romanesque monastery church of the Franciscans. It is in the register of monuments and has had the title of minor basilica since 1974. The church is seventy-six metres long, its facade is twenty-eight metres high and its two towers rise forty-eight metres each. A nativity scene is set up beside it every year. The Calvary occupies a park by the monastery, with chapels for the Passion and Marian devotion. Its beginnings go back to 1909, when wooden posts with pictures marked the spots of future chapels. Stones from the Holy Land were placed in 1911, and the stations were blessed on 16 July of that year by Fr Wilhelm Rogosz.
Which church in Panewniki is the newest?
The newest is the Church of St Anthony of Padua on Panewnicka Street, built in 2019-2023 and blessed on 4 June 2023.
It forms a piece of the friars' monastery at Stare Panewniki, and Grzegorz Ratajski designed it. Before that the parish used the former church of St Anthony at Panewnicka 463, arranged in 1958 in a building that had been a restaurant. Since 2023 the new church has taken over its role, and the old building is now only a former parish church. It is more a historical curiosity than a sightseeing stop.
Are there other churches from the later twentieth century in the district?
Yes, the parish church of Our Lady of the Rosary on Zadole Street was under construction from 1985 until 1992.
The decision about the parish and building was taken in 1983 by Bishop Herbert Bednorz, and John Paul II blessed the foundation stone at Muchowiec airfield. The church and its interior were designed by Michał Kuczmiński, and Robert Szota directed the construction. In later years mosaics, figures and an organ were added.
