Architecture in Wodzisław Śląski: a market square, the Classicist Dietrichstein Palace, a Gothic Franciscan friary and a Gothic Revival church.

The main monuments of Wodzisław Śląski gather around the square, while a palace in Kokoszyce and traces of former religious communities lie farther out. The story of the Franciscan town is told in a separate article. Similar buildings in other towns appear under architecture across Silesia, and other sights in the town's attractions.

What to see around the market square in Wodzisław Śląski?

Start at the square, then walk to the church of the Assumption and the Dietrichstein Palace beside it. These buildings span the 1700s to the early 1900s and are close enough to see on foot.

Houses from the 1800s line the market square; the southern half is paved and the northern half is a green corner with a fountain. On a rise above the north side stands the church of the Assumption, a brick Gothic Revival structure of 1909-1911 with a forty-metre tower, designed by Ludwig Schneider from Wrocław.

Also called the castle, the Dietrichstein Palace at Kubsza 2 went up in the 1740s where a medieval fortress had stood. Its two floors of masonry are Classicist, and the monument register includes the building. A town museum has worked inside since 1971, which means visitors can enter.

Where to find traces of friars, the Jewish community and a palace in a park?

Beyond the square, look for the Franciscan monastery complex, the former synagogue and the palace in Kokoszyce. The first two serve other functions today than originally, and the third is a retreat house, so they are best seen from outside.

At Minorytów 6A, the Franciscan complex is made up of a Gothic church of the 1300s and a Baroque monastery building of the 1600s. The order settled here in 1257. These days the church belongs to Lutherans, and a court sits in the former monastery.

The synagogue of 1826 stands in the old town, on Targowa Street. Rebuilt from 1938, it serves secular purposes and is not open to visitors. Its shape recalls the former Jewish community.

On Pałacowa Street in Kokoszyce stands a palace built early in the 1800s and surrounded by a wide park with eight ponds. An archdiocesan retreat house has operated in it since 1928, and the interiors are meant chiefly for its guests.
