Parks in Chorzów: the Silesian Park, Rose Park, the Rosarium, Hutników Park and Reden Hill - six green places from a rose garden to a park railway.

Chorzów is greener than its industrial past suggests: from the oldest park in the city, dating from the 19th century, to the vast Silesian Park, laid out on post-mining land. Some parks suit a short walk after work, others a whole day. Green spaces across the region are described under parks in Silesia, and the other places of Chorzów under things to do in Chorzów.

Which park in Chorzów is the largest?

The Silesian Park, covering about 535 hectares and counted among the largest urban parks in Europe. Work on it began in 1950 on former mining ground, and today it contains woodland and gardens as well as cultural and sports venues, for example the zoo and the planetarium.

The Silesian Park has several areas for walking. One is the Rosarium, a rose garden opened on 24 June 1968, with a collection of about 300 rose varieties arranged in a honeycomb pattern. Another is the park railway, a narrow-gauge line launched on 26 September 1957 that carries passengers through the park; over the decades it changed its route, track gauge and rolling stock. The history of the whole complex is told in the article The Silesian Park in Chorzów: from the 1950 decision to 535 hectares, and other themed gardens of the region in Botanical gardens, arboretums and themed gardens of Silesia.

Where in Chorzów for a shorter walk?

To three smaller green spaces, each of a different kind: the rose-garden park, the steelworkers' park and Reden Hill. All three are free to enter and are easy to combine in a single walk.

Rose Park, about 10 hectares, was designed in 1926-1930 in the block bounded by ul. Żwirki i Wigury, ul. Urbanowicza, ul. Piaskowa and ul. Astrów. A geometric rose garden fills the north, and there is also a statue of a mother and child beside two ponds that occupy an old sandpit. Hutników Park is Chorzów's earliest park, marked out in the early 1870s by Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck. It has about 2.5 hectares and appears on the monuments register. Reden Hill Park occupies a hill once known as Reden Hill and now as Liberation Hill. It rises 321 metres above sea level, Count von Reden's monument was put up here in 1853, and the park adjoins the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park.

Green spaces in the cities of the conurbation are covered in the article Nature reserves and green enclaves in the cities of the GZM.
