Churches and monasteries in Siewierz: the Romanesque Church of St John the Baptist, St Matthias's Church and the hospital church of St Barbara and St Valentine.

These are three churches of the former town of the Kraków bishops, from a Romanesque stone chapel to a Baroque-Classicist parish church. They stand close together in small Siewierz.

Which church in Siewierz is the oldest?

The Church of St John the Baptist is a Romanesque stone building from the 12th century, now a cemetery chapel. It is usually dated to about 1144, and Piotr Włostowic is named as its founder. Fragments of medieval polychromy survive in the apse, and the narrow windows recall its defensive role.

What is there near the bishops' castle?

St Matthias the Apostle's Church, built in the first half of the 15th century, was remodelled in 1647-1657 and again in 1782-1784. A wall with a bishops' gate surrounds it. The small Church of St Barbara and St Valentine at Krakowska 37 was finished in 1618 as a hospital church, with a late Renaissance altar.
