Historic sights in Sławków: a wooden inn with arcades, the ruins of the Kraków bishops' castle, the town hall and a brick synagogue.
Four buildings in a small town in the north of the Dąbrowa Basin. An hour's walk from the market square is enough to see them all.
What to see in Sławków on a short walk?
Everything begins on the market square. Rynek 2 is the address of the Sławków Inn (Austeria), an eighteenth-century timber tavern with arcades on six round stone columns, listed as a monument, set on the Wooden Architecture Trail and now serving as a restaurant. The middle of the square belongs to the town hall: the first building rose in the later 1700s, and the present shape comes from a rebuild in 1905.
Beyond the square, see the ruins of the castle of the Kraków bishops from the second half of the thirteenth century: mainly fragments of walls and a tower survive. At Biskupia 10 stands the synagogue of red brick. The former house of prayer has not served worship for a long time: after the war it became a cultural centre, and now it holds a warehouse, so the building is viewed from outside; a commemorative plaque hangs nearby. Other places in town are under Sławków and among its churches and monasteries, and comparable monuments across the province are listed in historic sights in Silesia.
