Cemeteries and monuments in Świętochłowice: the old cemetery on Cmentarna street and memorials to the Silesian insurgents in Piaśniki and Chropaczów.

Three places tied to the city's history: a parish burial ground from the late 19th century and two memorials to the Silesian Uprisings. Entry is free, and memorial sites call for quiet.

What does the monument in Piaśniki commemorate?

The Monument to the Silesian Insurgents stands in Heiloo Park on Bytomska street. The original obelisk of 1937 honoured nine insurgents of the First Silesian Uprising who were executed in August 1919 (18-20 August). After the war the monument was rebuilt.

In Chropaczów, on Łagiewnicka street, stands a boulder monument to the uprisings, dating from 1960. The stone dates from the Ice Age and was most probably dug out while foundations were laid for the Guidotto ironworks.

What does the old cemetery look like?

The Old Cemetery was consecrated on 16 September 1894 as the burial ground of the parish of St Peter and St Paul. The land was given by Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck. A wrought-iron gate and a Neo-Baroque brick portal mark the entrance, and a tall stone cross stands inside.
