Churches in Świętochłowice: a neo-Gothic church in Lipiny, a tent-shaped church in Piaśniki and a votive church raised for rescued miners.

Świętochłowice grew from several former settlements, and each left a church of its own. The six churches here show how mining damage, fires and postwar building shaped local sacred architecture.

Which church in Świętochłowice is the oldest?

The title is usually given to the Church of St Augustine in Lipiny, a neo-Gothic parish church from 1871-1872, listed as a monument, with a stone portal and a variety of vaults. Lipiny developed around zinc smelting and coal mining, and residents at first had to attend services in distant parishes. Bad roads and hard working conditions led them to ask for a church of their own. It stands at ul. dr. Antoniego Bukowego 22.

Which churches here have a turbulent past?

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Chropaczów, at Armii Krajowej 11, is a neo-Romanesque brick church from 1911-1913, designed by Max Giemsa of Katowice. It struggled with mining damage, was closed to worship, and burned almost to the ground in 1975 before being rebuilt. It is listed in the register of monuments.

In Zgoda stands the Church of St Joseph from 1931, built on a Latin-cross plan. It replaced an older church of 1884-1885 that was pulled down because of mining damage. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul on Katowicka street in the centre was raised in 1891 as a votive offering for miners rescued after a cave-in at a colliery in 1884. Two of these stories thus share one motif: the ground working beneath the town.

Which buildings are architecturally unusual?

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Piaśniki, at Chorzowska 4, resembles a many-sided tent with a tall bell tower. It was built of brick in 1982-1990 and its designer was Jacek Kosek. It was blessed in December 1990, and its form departs sharply from the neo-Gothic churches of the town.

The Church of St John the Baptist on Father Leopold Raabe square is different again, a neo-Gothic brick Lutheran church of 1900-1901 raised on land donated by Prince von Donnersmarck. After the churches, try the remaining attractions of Świętochłowice, among them its monuments and industrial sites. Churches of the whole voivodeship are described under churches and monasteries in Silesia.
