Museums in Będzin: the Zagłębie Museum, the Będzin Underground, Zuckerman's House of Prayer and a transport heritage room, all in one day.
The four places also work for a day when the weather is poor for walking, since all are indoors or underground. They show the history of the Dąbrowa Basin, the town's Jewish heritage and local transport.
Where to start a museum day in Będzin?
Begin with the Zagłębie Museum at Zamkowa 1. It was founded in 1956 and was the first museum in the Dąbrowa Basin.
It runs exhibitions on regional history in the castle, in the Mieroszewski palace in Gzichów, in the former Mizrachi house of prayer and in the Będzin Underground. The Underground is a route through an unfinished German air-raid shelter under Castle Hill, built in 1943-1944 by concentration camp prisoners. The complex has about seven hundred metres of corridors and galleries. This part of town is also covered in the article Będzin beyond the castle.
What smaller institutions does the town have?
Zuckerman's House of Prayer occupies a townhouse at Kołłątaja Avenue 24/28, and the Urban Transport Heritage Room is at Promyka 30.
The prayer house has wall paintings, one of only two sets found in the Silesian Voivodeship, and it was opened to visitors in 2007. The room, founded in 2013, shows vintage buses, tickets and uniforms, and you enter by appointment. For further sites see Będzin and the regional list of museums in Silesia.
