a route in a shelter cut into Castle Hill in 1943-1944, with an exhibition on the history of Będzin

Solo in Będzin: a castle, underground tunnels, a water tower and museums for wet weather. Fifteen places in the Zagłębie Dąbrowskie for a solo trip.

Będzin is a town on hills above the Czarna Przemsza and one of the best places in the Zagłębie Dąbrowskie for solo sightseeing. The main sites lie close together, while museums and churches fill the hours when weather spoils a walk. The full overview of the town is in things to do in Będzin.

What can you see alone in Będzin?

Start with the castle and the castle hill, then go down to the walls and the museum, and in the afternoon travel to Grodziec for the water tower. If it rains, pick the tunnels or one of the houses of prayer. Everything fits into two short days.

The set covers a castle and fortifications, four museums, six churches and a palace with a park. Wider ideas for solo outings in the region are under things to do alone in Silesia. The town beyond the castle is also covered in the article Będzin beyond the castle: tunnels, walls, the Grodziec water tower and the Zagłębie Museum.

How to explore the castle hill in Będzin?

On the hill stand the castle, the Holy Trinity church, a stretch of wall and St Thomas's church. It is the densest part of town for monuments and a good first target, because everything lies within a short walk.

The castle in Będzin dominates the Czarna Przemsza valley and is the town's signature building. In 1349 Casimir the Great linked it to an older stone tower, and its present shape comes from a nineteenth-century rebuilding and a reconstruction in 1952-1956. The history of the building is told in Będzin Castle: from Casimir the Great to Lanci's reconstruction in 1834.

The Holy Trinity Church on Plebańska Street occupies the area of the old stronghold beside the castle. The single-nave brick church with its tower goes back to the 1300s and blends Gothic with Baroque. Nearby is St Thomas's church, a masonry cemetery church of 1834. Inside survive a Baroque altar and Gothic sculptures, and the church belongs to the Holy Trinity parish.

Casimir the Great ordered the town walls built in the 1360s. A short section survives with two partly reconstructed rectangular towers, near Modrzejowska Street and Zawale. The oval outline of the old town can now be read only from a map.

Where to shelter from rain in Będzin?

Four places offer cover, each with old interiors and collections: the Zagłębie Museum, the tunnels under the hill, a historic prayer house and a small transport room. Two of them require prior arrangements, so check the entry conditions before you travel.

The Zagłębie Museum opened in 1956 as the first institution of its kind in the area. Its exhibitions are spread over several sites: the castle, the Mieroszewski palace, the tunnels and the former Mizrachi house of prayer. The address is Zamkowa 1.

The Będzin Underground is a tour through a German bomb shelter under the castle hill that was never completed. Work on it ran in 1943-1944, with concentration camp prisoners cutting the rock. Corridors and galleries total roughly seven hundred metres, and the museum organises the visits. It is a dark and serious place, so do not treat it as entertainment.

The Urban Transport Heritage Room at Promyka 30 is a modest museum beside the Sosnowiec transport company. Opened in 2013, it shows old buses, tickets and uniforms, and visits must be arranged beforehand.

What Jewish heritage can you see in Będzin?

Two small houses of prayer with painted interiors survive in town, both run as museums. Before the war Będzin had more than eighty such private houses of prayer, so these two are rare traces of the life of a large community.

Zuckerman's House of Prayer was arranged in a former flat in a townhouse, upstairs on Kołłątaja Avenue. Nuchim Zuckerman started it, and guests have come in since 2007. Painted wall decoration is visible, and the region has yielded just one other comparable discovery. The Mizrachi Synagogue is a nineteenth-century prayer room below a townhouse at Potockiego 3, now a department of the Zagłębie Museum. What matters most is its painted interior, which has monument status as a movable item.

The historical context of these places is described in Synagogues burnt in September 1939 and Ghettos in Będzin, Sosnowiec and Zawiercie. Visit them with respect.

What to see in Gzichów, Grodziec and other districts?

Beyond the centre wait a palace in Gzichów, a water tower in Grodziec and four churches from various districts. Plan a separate trip to Grodziec, as it lies far from the castle hill.

The Mieroszewski Palace at Gzichowska 15 was built of brick in the early eighteenth century in a Baroque-Neoclassical style, modelled on French residences. With its wall paintings and park it is part of the Zagłębie Museum.

The water tower in Grodziec, from the start of the twentieth century, is believed to be the country's only water tower made entirely with rivets. It served a mine and was renovated in 2020. Other towers of the region are described in Water towers of Silesia.

Grodziec also has two churches. St Dorothy's Church on St Dorothy's Hill was built in 1635 at the expense of an abbess of the Norbertine nuns of Zwierzyniec; a rubble-stone wall surrounds it. St Catherine's Church at Wolności 303 is a Baroque building of the eighteenth century, enlarged in the 1930s, and a separate brick belfry 35 metres high.

In Łagisza you find a post-war parish church built from 1946, with a Way of the Cross of 1949. In Koszelew St Barbara's Church was fitted into a former mine assembly room; a crowned painting of the Black Madonna hangs inside.

Frequently asked questions

What to visit in Będzin when it rains?

Head for the Zagłębie Museum, the tunnels, the prayer house on Kołłątaja Avenue or the transport room. The latter is open by appointment.

Where is the water tower in Będzin?

In the Grodziec district. The steel structure dates from 1902 and was renovated in 2020.

How long does it take to see the castle hill?

The castle, the Holy Trinity church, St Thomas's church and the walls lie close together, so a walk round the hill fits into one visit. The castle and the museum need separate time.
