Architecture in Mysłowice: Neo-Gothic churches by Paul Jackisch, a Baroque church of the early 1300s, synagogues, tomb chapels and a villa.
Mysłowice has no single historic centre, but it has several compact groups of buildings. Two churches stand on Starokościelna Street, an Evangelical church and a villa on Powstańców Street, and two chapels in the old cemetery on Mikołowska Street.
Which churches in Mysłowice should you see first?
Two churches stand side by side on Starokościelna Street. The Nativity of the Virgin Mary church is said to be the oldest place of worship in the town: its walls reach back to the 1300s, and the Baroque interior dates from 1740-1744. Next to it rises the brick Sacred Heart church, a Neo-Gothic work of 1888-1891 designed by Paul Jackisch, topped by a 70-metre tower.
The Holy Cross church on Świerczyny Street looks different: an eight-sided stone chapel from around 1810, with a dome crowned by a small bell turret.
Where to see nineteenth-century buildings and cemetery chapels
Powstańców Street holds two buildings of the late 1800s. The Lutheran church serves a Lutheran congregation; Jackisch designed this Neo-Gothic body too (1875-1877), and a stained-glass window of 1927 hangs over the altar. At number 13 stands Kuder Villa, a single-storey Neo-Renaissance house of the 1870s, entered in the register of monuments, with 25 rooms over more than 450 square metres.
Two tomb chapels wait in the old parish cemetery, to be visited quietly. The chapel of Father Ludwik Markiefka, dated 1858, is octagonal and Neo-Renaissance. The Klaus family chapel of 1870 to 1871 represents the Neo-Gothic.
What is left of the synagogues in Mysłowice?
Both synagogues have a quite different use today than at the start. The synagogue on Mieroszewskich Square was raised in 1826. Since 1928 it has housed a Catholic People's House, and the wooden women's galleries survive inside.
In Brzezinka, a district of Mysłowice, stands a second building: the former synagogue of 1910 to 1911, of brick, with an ornamental gable. It changed hands in 1922 and now has a commercial user, so you look at it from the street.
The historical background of a town that once lay where three empires met is told in a text on the Three Emperors' Corner. A selection of buildings from the whole region is on the architecture page, and the full list for the town is under Mysłowice attractions.
