Hutnik Park
Siemianowice Śląskie, Śniadeckiego 11

Modernist park from the 1920s by the former steelworks baths, with a fountain and a playground

Parks in Siemianowice Śląskie are five green spaces: Górnik Park with its small castle, Hutnik, Pszczelnik, the Town Park and People's Park.

The choice shows how different parks in one city can be: a former residence, a park beside a steelworks, greenery with a sports centre, and a site damaged by mining.

Which park in Siemianowice Śląskie to see first?

For a walk around a palace the best is the Town Park, and for a longer, more active day Pszczelnik. For a short trip to Michałkowice go to Górnik Park with its pond and little castle. In the centre, between Śniadeckiego and Fitznerów streets, lies Hutnik.

The Town Park covers 17.83 ha and is an English-style landscape park, laid out beside the former Donnersmarck residence. It lies by Parkowa and Fryderyka Chopina streets. It is regarded as the city's showpiece park, with natural monuments and rare trees. The present palace dates from 1786, and the complex goes back to the seventeenth century, when the estate belonged to the Mieroszewski family.

Pszczelnik covers about 26 ha and was laid out around 1870 on the site of the former Bienenhof farm. The park appears in the heritage register, and a fragment has the status of an ecological site. Along the paths there is a sports complex: a pool, a hall and courts.

How do the parks in Michałkowice and the centre differ?

Górnik Park lies on Oświęcimska street and was created in the early twentieth century. Its earlier name was Rheinbaben Park. Its centre is a pond fed with water from the former Michał mine, and the palace complex includes a house for the forester and gardener, a fountain and a grotto (a rock garden).

People's Park in Michałkowice was created between the wars on the decision of the parish head Walenty Fojkis, near old quarries. It was meant as a counterpart to the Rheinbaben family's private park, closed to local people. There were two bathing pools, a toboggan run and a restaurant, but mining damage degraded the site, so today it is more a place for curious history than a promenade.

Hutnik Park covers 2.47 ha. The grounds have no fence, and in the middle lies an oval basin with a lit fountain. Laid out around the mid-1920s in modernist style, the park adjoins the bathhouse of the “Laura” steelworks, opened in 1908.
