Historic sites in Siemianowice Śląskie: palaces in the centre and Michałkowice, Fitzner Villa, a brick town hall and workers' estates of the former Laura mine.
Eight buildings tell of a town of magnates and steelworkers, from the residences of powerful families to the colonies where miners lived. Some stand in the centre, others in Michałkowice, by Górnik Park.
Which residences can you see in Siemianowice Śląskie?
In the centre, at Chopina 15, stands the palace known as the Donnersmarck or Mieroszewski palace. The complex has a Baroque and a classicist part, is listed as a monument, and changed owners and functions over the centuries. The Mieroszewski family began building it in the seventeenth century.
At Fitznerów 3 stands Fitzner Villa of 1859, the residence of the industrialist Wilhelm Fitzner, with an orangery and reception rooms added in 1883. It houses the Siemianowice Cultural Centre.
What can you visit in Michałkowice and Górnik Park?
On Oświęcimska Street, within the municipal Górnik Park, stand two buildings. The Rheinbaben Palace, called the Little Castle, has an orangery and a mirror hall, and since 2016 it has been a branch of the Siemianowice Cultural Centre. At number 7 you will see the forester's and gardener's house: a brick neo-Gothic building with a round tower that resembles a small castle. Louis Dame designed it in 1906 for the Hohenlohe works.
Where do you find traces of industry and workers' life?
The former Laura mine is recalled by three buildings at Składowa 1, 2 and 3, which housed the supervisors and the management; today they are residential. On Górnicza Street stands a brick workers' estate known as Bergmonka, from around 1908: four multi-family houses at numbers 6 to 9, one of the few surviving company estates in the town.
The municipal bathhouse of 1907-1908, built for the Laura steelworkers, belongs to this story too. Known as Badyhala, it works as a swimming pool and entered the register of monuments as one of the oldest working indoor pools in Poland.
Is there a monument of administration in the town?
Yes, the town hall on Jana Pawła II Street, a four-storey brick building of 1904. The municipal builder Johannes Seiffert designed it, and a clock tower rises on the corner. The council chamber has stained glass, and the building still serves the town authorities.
