Churches in Tychy: the late modernist Church of the Holy Spirit, the Franciscan Little Assisi and the Baroque Basilica of St Mary Magdalene.
The five churches show how the city has changed, from the oldest church of the late 18th century to those built in new estates and a Lutheran church. Two of them were designed by the same architect, Stanisław Niemczyk. It is a good list for anyone interested in modern sacred architecture in Silesia.
Which Tychy church has the longest history?
The oldest is the Church of St Mary Magdalene at Damrota 60, a late Baroque building of 1780-1782, today a minor basilica.
Construction began in 1780, and two years later the church was ready for blessing. Part of the funding came from the Prince of Pszczyna, Friedrich Erdmann Anhalt-Köthen, and the design was by the architect Jan Gest. In 1906-1907 the church was extended into the shape of a Latin cross. The title of minor basilica makes it the seventh such church in the Katowice archdiocese. Which Tychy churches are contemporary architecture?
The best known is the Church of the Holy Spirit at Myśliwska 43, late modernist, raised from 1978 to 1982 after plans by Stanisław Niemczyk. Since 2019 it has been a registered monument.
The building permit came in 1976, and Bishop Herbert Bednorz blessed the foundation stone in 1979. The interior has polychromes by Jerzy Nowosielski. Niemczyk also designed the Church of St Francis of Assisi and St Clare, known as Little Assisi. It is made of dolomite on a Franciscan cross plan, at the crossing of Przemysłowa and Paprocańska streets. Consent for the build was given in 1999, John Paul II blessed the foundation stone, and work started in 2000. The forms refer to the basilica in Assisi. The Church of St John the Baptist of 1958 was designed by Zbigniew Weber. It rose on the fields of the former village of Żwaków, in haste and by the labour of residents, before the permit had been issued.
Where is the Lutheran church?
The Church of Sts Peter and Paul belongs to the Lutheran parish and was built in 1987-1995.
Tychy Lutherans have had a parish since 1983. The furnishings were made by the sculptor Czesław Dźwigaj, and the organ comes from the Ahlborn company. Other places in Tychy are on the Tychy page and under museums in Tychy. A wider overview of the region is churches and monasteries in Silesia.
