a museum of city history in the Old Town Hall with a branch devoted to Tychy sport

Museums in Tychy: the Tyskie Browarium, one of the smallest museums in Poland, a typewriter collection and the city history museum.

Tychy is associated with its brewery and planned architecture, yet its museums are more varied than you might expect. The six places here include a large institution and private collections that make do with a few dozen square metres.

Which museum in Tychy should you see first?

For most visitors it will be the Tyskie Browarium, a museum and visitor centre of the Tyskie Princely Breweries at ul. Katowicka 9. It fills a renovated building from 1902 that once housed a Protestant congregation. The venue has operated since 2004, while the brewery itself dates its beginnings to 1629. With rain in the forecast it is a sound pick, as the tour is indoors. The city and its brewery also feature in an article on Tychy and the princely brewery.

Where can you learn about the city's story and local sport?

The Tychy City Museum tells of the fortunes of the town and its residents. The headquarters is a former town hall, the Stary Magistrat, on plac Wolności. The institution was established in November 2004, and its opening exhibition was entitled “A Hundred Years in the Life of a City. Tychy and Its People in the 20th Century”.

A branch of the museum, the Tychy Sports Gallery, operates inside the Municipal Stadium, one level below the roof, at Edukacji 7. Its standing display presents athletes from Tychy, above all footballers and hockey players, while an interactive comic strip on football appeals to children.

Which small private collections can you find in Tychy?

The Museum of Professional Miniature Art has been set up in a residential high-rise at Żwakowska 8, in two rooms totalling roughly twenty-two square metres. It opened in 2013. The holdings fall into four departments: painting, drawing and graphics, sculpture and ceramics, and phaleristics, heraldry and edged weapons. Local publications count it among the tiniest institutions of its kind anywhere.

A quite different profile belongs to the Office Machines Museum, a private collection of over five hundred and fifty items. The oldest typewriter, made by the American firm Odell, was built in 1882. There are also calculating machines, hole punchers and typewriters for Braille.

For exhibition-goers there is the Obok Gallery, the city's art gallery on an upper floor of the Andromeda Culture Arcade. Unlike the museums, it keeps no collection on show all the time, only changing displays of painting, sculpture, graphics, textiles and photography. A fuller picture of the city comes from the attractions of Tychy, and of the region from a roundup of museums in Silesia. Afterwards, look in at the churches and monasteries of Tychy.
